Black Garlic Hot Chocolate

Black Garlic Hot Chocolate

Before you decide the notion of putting garlic in hot chocolate is completely nuts, hear us out!  It's not just any garlic, it's black garlic! Black garlic is cooked low and slow for several days, resulting in caramelized cloves that turn black and sticky.  It doesn’t have the characteristic bite of regular garlic and is surprisingly sweet and complexly flavored.

Black Garlic Hot Chocolate

Black Garlic Hot Chocolate

Including black garlic in with this cold weather staple adds a depth of flavor that melds very well with chocolate. Enjoy this leveled up cup of cozy anytime. We especially love it for an afternoon pick-me-up. As is, this hot chocolate is only mildly sweet and is what our family prefers. If you like it sweeter, add more maple syrup or honey.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk of choice (we use organic whole milk)
  • 5 cloves black garlic, peeled
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa or cacao powder
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup or raw honey
  • pinch of sea salt (try our Black Garlic Salt for an additional punch of flavor)
  • 2 tablespoons semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons collagen powder, optional
  • toppings - like freshly whipped cream, a sprinkle of Black Garlic Salt, or chocolate shavings, optional

Instructions

  1. Pour milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium until steaming (don’t boil or scorch).
  2. Meanwhile, add black garlic, cocoa powder, maple syrup, sea salt, and collagen (if using) to a blender. Set aside.
  3. When milk is hot, remove from heat and stir in chocolate chips until melted.
  4. Add chocolatey milk mixture to blender. Blitz on high until incorporated, venting the lid as necessary to let steam escape.
  5. Pour into mugs and enjoy.

Notes

Add more maple syrup or honey if you prefer a sweeter cup of hot chocolate.
